Kunst aus Portugal: "UNIQUE"-Artikel über den Bildhauer Jorge Mealha

Jorge Mealha tem vindo a tornar-se um dos mais importantes ceramistas e escultores portugueses desde a sua chegado ao Algarve, vinte anos atrás e, este ano, terá mesmo recebido a maior prova deste reconhecimento ao ter sido convidado a expor no Museu Nacional do Azulejo em Lisboa.
Jorge Mealha trabalha num pequeno estúdio adjacente à sua casa situado no Monte do Funchal situado nos arredores de Lagos, e tem vindo a tornar-se notado, especialmente, através de obras criadas para espaços públicos e monumentos bem como inúmeras encomendas para casas particulares. Entre as primeiras as mais conhecidas são o painel com vinte metros de comprimento que ornamenta a entrada da Marina de Lagos, e outro com sessenta metros quadrados que é o ponto fulcral da fachada do Marinotel em Vilamoura.
Jorge Mealha é representado pelo Centro Cultural de S. Lourenço, em Almancil e muita da sua obra está espalhada pelas casas de vários coleccionadores na Quinta do Lago.
Muita da notoriedade que tem vindo a alcançar advêm da sua obra escultórica - colunas altas em que assentam pássaros, animais, e mesmo formas humanas impregnadas de um fino humor que por vezes roça o "kitsch" ou simples formas cilíndricas usadas em módulos e combinadas de várias maneiras obtendo esculturas despojadas, mas de poderoso efeito plástico.
A sua atracção pelos pássaros e pelos animais em geral remonta à sua infância passada em Moçambique, território onde nasceu e foi criado.
"Serão sempre parte do meu universo, e contribuem para o meu trabalho e a minha forma de ver a vida com a mesma força que escultura africana.", - disse-nos.
Outra importante presença espiritual no seu trabalho, é a de Rosa Ramalho, artista "naïve" de Bucelas, que criava formas plenas de imaginação de forte carácter surrealista. Estas esculturas que tinham como pricipais temas animais e formas humanas de aspecto rústico, acabaram por lhe granjear alguma fama já com noventa anos de idade. Jorge guarda em sua casa com especial carinho algumas obras desta artista.
Enquanto jovem e ainda em Moçambique estudou desenho, escultura e gravura tendo como professor António Quadros. Deu início, também em Moçambique, à sua carreira artística antes de se mudar para Portugal em 1975, para escapar às convulsões políticas que abalavam então as antigas colónias africanas.
O humor e os temas animais tem vindo a ser progressivamente abandonadas em favor de formas mais simples e predominantemente geométricas. Estes últimos trabalhos integram de forma surpreendente forma e função, podendo ser utilizados como objectos práticos para a casa ou jardim ou expostos como elementos escultóricos de intrínseca beleza.

UNIQUE 1995/96

Jorge Mealha has become one of Portugal's leading ceramic artists since settling in the Algarve 20 years ago and this year received his biggest accolade when he was invited to exhibit his work in the National Museum of Tiles in Lisbon.
He works in a studio attached to his home in the Funchal Ridge just outside Lagos and is perhaps best known for the large tile panels created for public buildings and monuments as well as private houses. Among the most notable are a 20-metre panel which decorates the entrance to Lagos Marina and a 60 m₂ work which is the focal point of the facade of the Marinotel in Vilamoura.
He is also represented by the Centro Cultural de São Lourenço in Almancil and a number of Quinta do Lago residents and other collectors in the region have bought his work.
Jorge has also become popular for his ceramic sculptures - tall columns surmounted by birds, animal and human forms which are often designed with a humour bordering on the kitsch, or simple cylindrical shapes used as modules and combined in various relationships to form simple and powerful sculptures.
His preoccupation with birds and animals stretches back to his formative years in Mozambique where he was born and grew up. "They were always part of my universe there and influenced my vision of life just as African sculpture did," he said.
An important spiritual influence in his work is the ceramic sculptures of the naive artist Rosa Ramalho, who worked in Bucelas producing highly imaginative surrealistic pieces. These sculptures, based on rustic themes of animals and human figures, earned her national fame by the time she died in her 90s. Jorge has an excellent collection of her work at his home.
As a young man in Mozambique he studied drawing, sculpture, and printmaking under António Quadros and worked as an artist in Africa before moving to Portugal in 1975 to escape the political upheavals which came in the wake of the struggle for liberation in Mozambique and Angola.
The humour and animal themes have given way in recent years to more simple and aesthetically pleasing forms which are predominantly geometric. They are made in stoneware and integrate form and function in such a way that they serve both as practical objects for home or garden as well as sculptures in their own right.
